(4) Exhaust Stroke. As the piston moves upward on the fourth stroke, it forces the burned and expanded

gases from the cylinder through the open exhaust valve, which closes just before the piston reaches top dead center.

The air inlet valve opens and the cycles are repeated (i. e., there are two down and two up strokes in the cycle).
